Gum disease is a common oral disease that has health repercussions that extend beyond your teeth and gums. A growing health concern, more research is being conducted on the oral-body connection in patients with gum disease and an increased risk of other serious systemic diseases. Prevention is key to avoiding secondary dental and health complications. Good at home oral hygiene, routine oral health exams and preliminary testing of gum disease can help prevent the spread of harmful bacteria.
Gum disease is the number one leading cause of tooth loss in adults.
Dr. Poorva Parnaik focuses on helping patients prevent and manage the spread of gum disease through innovative preventative measures. Dr. Parnaik provides a comprehensive analysis of the health of the gums and surrounding soft tissue and uses oral microbiology testing to allow for more proactive and precise treatment.
Oral Microbiology Testing
Dr. Parnaik uses oral infection screenings to identify harmful bacteria that may be present in the mouth. Microbiology tests measure the levels of bacteria present in the plaque and biofilm. This type of testing can catch gum disease before it begins to spread, compromising the stability and health of the teeth and gums.
Testing for and treating oral bacteria can prevent the development of advanced periodontists, eliminate halitosis (bad breath) and prevent implantitis and other oral infections.
Importance of Oral Infection Screening
The oral infection screening is an essential tool that can:
- Control Gingivitis
- Prevent Advanced Gum Disease
- Improve Bad Breath
- Promote total body health
How Microbiology Testing Works
Dr. Parnaik takes a surface culture of the biofilm in the mouth using OraVital BioFilm ™. The culture is secured and sent to a laboratory for assessment. The test will create a bacterial profile of your mouth showing where and how much bacteria is present.
If high levels of bacteria are present, but no additional damage has yet to occur, Dr. Parnaik can provide treatment to prevent the spread of bacteria eliminating the risk of future damage to the teeth and gums. Dr. Parnaik may prescribe a topical anti-bacterial mouth rinse to help eliminate the presence of bacteria.
For patients with more advanced cases of gum disease, Dr. Parnaik can tailor treatment to eliminate bacteria build up from the pockets of the gums. Microbiology testing in combination with periodontal therapy and laser treatments can remove harmful bacteria and allow the gums to begin to heal.
