What is Sedation Dentistry?

There are several types of sedation dentistry. Dr. Parnaik offers oral conscious sedation, which is a pill form, that helps patients relax and feel more comfortable during their procedure. Oral sedation is on of the most popular forms of sedation dentistry, particularly useful for patients who have dental anxiety or need to have an extensive or long procedure completed.

Other forms of sedation dentistry include nitrous oxide (laughing gas), which is used to provide mild pain relief and distract patients from their procedure. IV sedation dentistry can involve delivery of medication through the veins for patients who can’t tolerate oral medication. IV sedation can also be used for general anesthesia.

Sedation Dentistry: What to Expect

The first step is to visit our Medford NJ dentist office for an evaluation. Dr. Parnaik will evaluate your condition and make a recommendation on the right type of sedation. With an oral medication, it is necessary for you to have an adult escort to and from your procedure. During your procedure, you will be relaxed and comfortable, yet fully awake and able to respond with Dr. Parnaik and her staff. Most patients who’ve had sedation dentistry say they have little or no memory of their visit.

Sedation Dentistry FAQs

Is this the same as sleep dentistry?
Sleep dentistry is a confusing word. By medical board standards, the term sleep dentistry is reserved for the use of general anesthesia. Dr. Parnaik uses oral conscious sedation, which may make you feel drowsy, but allow you to remain awake and fully conscious throughout treatment.

Is it safe?
Yes, oral conscious sedation is very safe. Dr. Parnaik has undergone training with the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation and is licensed by the New Jersey State Dental Board to offer sedation dentistry. Your safety is our top priority. Your vital signs will be constantly monitored and you will be supervised at all times by a member of our staff.

Will I be able to feel anything?
No, you will be completely numb and unable to feel your procedure. You will also be unaware of surrounding sounds and smells.

How long will I be “asleep”?
Depending on your procedure, you may be relaxed for two to six hours. You will need to bring an adult companion to your appointment to drive you home safely.

Am I a candidate for sedation dentistry?
The first step is an exam and consultation with Dr. Parnaik to determine if you are a candidate for sedation dentistry. This method of treatment is highly effective in patients who have dental anxiety, fear of the dentist, difficulty getting numb, poor gag reflex, sensitive teeth and/or complex dental problems. Some medical or health conditions could disqualify you from sedation treatment.
